Renowned actor Danny Trejo is marking a monumental milestone in his life, celebrating 55 years of sobriety. The 79-year-old actor, known for his roles in films like Machete Kills, took to Instagram to share his accomplishment and offer words of encouragement to those who are also on their path to recovery.
Trejo attributes his success to taking it one day at a time and the grace of God. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he said, I’m 55 years clean and sober today by the grace of God! I’ve done this one day at a time, and for anyone out there struggling YOU CAN TOO!
Trejo’s journey to sobriety was not without its challenges. In his memoir, Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood, he reflects on his difficult upbringing and a tumultuous past that led him to spend 11 years in and out of California’s most notorious prisons for crimes such as selling drugs and armed robberies.
However, in 1968, Trejo experienced a pivotal moment that changed the course of his life. He made a promise to the Lord, vowing to amend his ways and help his fellow inmates if he were to die with dignity. Little did he know that this promise would be the catalyst for his transformation.
After being released from prison in 1969, Trejo sought help through Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and eventually became a drug counselor himself. His dedication to helping others caught the attention of director Andrei Konchalovsky while he was on the set of Runaway Train. Recognizing Trejo’s boxing skills, the director cast him alongside Eric Roberts in a boxing scene, kickstarting Trejo’s acting career.
Reflecting on his journey, Trejo remarked, Everything good that has happened to me has happened as a direct result of helping someone else. This selfless attitude has guided his path, leading him to appear in over 400 on-screen roles.
