Former New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori has been appointed as the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. The announcement was made by the team on their official Twitter account, welcoming the Kiwi legend to the #OrangeArmy.
Vettori, who previously served as the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014 to 2018, and more recently worked as an assistant coach for the Australia men’s team, will now take charge of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has also contributed his expertise as a spin-bowling consultant for the Bangladesh men’s team.
The 44-year-old replaces West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara, who held the position of head coach for the Hyderabad-based franchise in the 2023 IPL season. The decision to appoint Vettori comes after Lara’s departure following the end of his two-year association with the Sunrisers.
Lara, who initially held the roles of strategic advisor and batting coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2022 season, was promoted to the position of head coach after former coach Tom Moody left the team. However, under Lara’s guidance, the Sunrisers finished in last place (tenth) in the 2023 edition of the IPL, with only four wins and ten losses to their name.
The appointment of Vettori brings a wealth of cricketing knowledge and experience to the Sunrisers Hyderabad. As a highly respected figure in the cricketing world, his expertise and leadership qualities will play an essential role in shaping the team’s performance in the upcoming IPL season.
Fans of the Sunrisers will be eagerly anticipating Vettori’s impact as the new head coach. With his impressive track record as a player, coach, and consultant, there is optimism that he will be able to guide the team to success.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad will hope that the appointment of Daniel Vettori as head coach will mark a turning point for the franchise, leading them to improved performances and better results in the highly competitive Indian Premier League.
