Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that he will urge the Central government to increase the reservation percentage for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under the 9th Schedule of the Constitution in order to prevent opposition to it in the future. He was speaking after being felicitated by the Federation of Backward Classes and Dalit seers. He criticised the previous BJP-led government’s hike in reservation, saying that it was nothing but an election gimmick. Siddaramaiah pledged that his government will provide equal opportunities to all people regardless of their social status. The new government is expected to implement various socio-economic surveys and provide necessary facilities for education, employment and business. Siddaramaiah assured the people of Karnataka that his government will also continue popular initiatives such as Annabhagya, Ksheerabhagya and Indira Canteen while implementing new schemes that incur an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 59,000 crore.
