Cyprus police investigations have reportedly supported claims made by Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, that an Iranian-backed hitman was planning to target Israelis and other Jewish individuals on the island. According to an anonymous intelligence official, Cypriot authorities were tracking an Iranian national named Yusef Shahabazi Abbasalilu based on information obtained from friendly intelligence services. Further investigations revealed a plot to carry out these killings, with at least one person on a hit list.
It is believed that Abbasalilu initially tried to establish a base and recruit others in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north, where the internationally recognized authorities have no access. However, the fact that the breakaway north is not a part of the international legal order raised concerns for domestic and foreign security services. Cyprus police had been tracing Abbasalilu in the southern part of the island when he managed to cross into the north through a UN-controlled buffer zone. Turkish Cypriot authorities identified him as a potential security risk and deported him back to Iran.
This recent statement by the intelligence official marks the first time that Cypriot officials have spoken publicly about the case. Last month, Mossad claimed that its agents inside Iran apprehended Abbasalilu, who supposedly provided investigators with a detailed confession. Footage released by Mossad showed Abbasalilu confessing on camera, admitting that he received his orders from Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, it remains unclear whether Abbasalilu spoke under duress.
Israel has long regarded Iran as its greatest adversary, citing the Iranian government’s calls for its destruction and its support for hostile militant groups. Additionally, Israel accuses Iran of attempting to develop a nuclear bomb, a claim that Iran denies.
Cyprus is currently holding a trial for an Azeri man with a Russian passport who is suspected of planning to carry out contract killings of Israelis residing in the country. The intelligence official noted that this individual employed a similar plan as Abbasalilu.
