Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 17 (ANI): Heavy rains have been lashing the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, and Ramanathapuram, since the early morning hours of Sunday, causing disruptions to normal life. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of cyclonic winds over the eastern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and the Gulf of Mannar.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is expected in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu on December 18. Similar conditions are predicted for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts on December 19. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely to occur in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on the same day.

The IMD has forecast squally weather with wind speeds of 40-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, over the southwest Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, Kerala coast, and Lakshadweep area from December 15 to 18. In response to the warning, fishermen from Nagapattinam district have refrained from venturing into the sea and have secured their boats and fishing nets on the shore. Over 650 boats and 3,300 fiber boats can be seen in fisherman villages along the coast.

While Chennai is expected to have generally cloudy sky conditions for the next 24 hours, moderate rainfall is likely in some areas. Fishermen in the region have also been advised against entering the sea.

The heavy rains and cyclonic winds have caused inconvenience to the public, with disrupted transportation and the waterlogging of low-lying areas. Local authorities are actively working to minimize the impact of the heavy rainfall on the affected districts. Further updates and precautions will be provided as the situation develops.
