May 9 — CUMBERLAND — The mayor and City Council on Tuesday authorized $200,000 for acquisition, demolition and/or site preparation of several residential properties on Central Avenue. The city aims to eliminate blight visible from Interstate 68 and create green space, with potential for future development. Matching funds from Allegany County are crucial for the project’s success. Cumberland officials are optimistic about the project, indicating interest from multiple property owners. The revitalization effort could also qualify for state funding through the community legacy program. Additionally, the council took various actions, including property transfers, cost-sharing agreements, grant acceptance, and updates on major projects like the skate park at Gene Mason Sports Complex. The city continues its efforts to enhance public spaces and infrastructure for the community’s benefit.
