The Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) may be conducted earlier in 2024, according to the new director general of the National Testing Agency (NTA), Subodh Kumar Singh. In an exclusive interview with the Times of India, Singh discussed the potential reforms that could be implemented for the upcoming edition of the CUET-UG.

The first edition of the CUET-UG in 2022 faced technical glitches, resulting in multiple postponements. This year, the exam was extended multiple times due to a shortage of exam centers equipped with computers that met the required specifications. Singh, who assumed his role as NTA DG in June during the CUET-UG 2023, highlighted the need for early notification and early exams, as well as the identification of exam centers in advance to ensure a shorter exam period.

Singh expressed his desire to consult with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and universities to explore the possibility of conducting the exam in May, shortly after the Board exams. This would facilitate smoother delivery of the exam and allow for timely announcement of results, without disrupting the universities’ admission cycle.

Although this year’s exams were conducted smoothly, the NTA had to extend the schedule multiple times to accommodate candidates in their preferred locations. Singh emphasized the NTA’s agenda to shorten the exam schedule, ensuring a more streamlined process.

In conclusion, the CUET-UG may undergo several reforms in its upcoming edition, including early notification, conducting exams in May after the Board exams, and better coordination with universities and the UGC. These measures aim to improve the delivery of the exam and avoid any impact on the admission cycle. The NTA is committed to enhancing the exam experience for candidates and ensuring a more efficient process.
