Cricket Set to Make Olympics Debut in 2028 Los Angeles Games

Cricket, one of the world’s most popular sports, is all set to make its debut in the Olympic Games in 2028. The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Executive Board has approved the inclusion of cricket along with other disciplines for the Los Angeles Games. The decision comes after the sport’s successful inclusion in events like the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The cricket matches in the Olympics will be played in the thrilling T20 format, which has gained immense popularity due to its fast-paced nature. In addition to cricket, the 2028 edition is also likely to feature baseball-softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash. These sports have received the nod from the IOC Executive Board, and the final voting will take place during the IOC session starting on Sunday.

India, known for its strong cricketing culture, stands to benefit significantly from this decision as it presents a new opportunity for the country to excel and secure medals. President of the IOC Executive Board, Thomas Bach, mentioned that the inclusion of cricket is a way to engage with new athletes and fans, taking into account the American sports culture.

The initial plan for the Los Angeles Games was to organize a six-team event for both men’s and women’s T20 cricket, with the host nation, the USA, fielding teams. However, the final decision regarding the number of participating teams will be determined later. IOC’s director of sports, Kit McConnell, has confirmed that the proposal from LA aimed to ensure gender equality with six teams in each sport for both men and women.

The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is a significant milestone for the sport, as it hasn’t been part of the Games since 1900. This move is expected to broaden cricket’s global reach and provide a platform for its further expansion. The IOC has recommended the inclusion of five sports, including cricket, for the upcoming edition of the Olympics in 2028.

Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash are the five sports submitted by the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board to the upcoming IOC Session as additional sports for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, stated the IOC.

The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is not only a victory for the sport but also an opportunity for athletes to showcase their skills on a global stage. With the potential for increased viewership and engagement, cricket’s presence in the Olympics promises to be an exciting development for players, fans, and the sporting community at large.
