The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), has defended its decision to seek sponsorship for sharing dais and food with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during his New York visit for inaugurating the ‘Loka Kerala Sabha’ diaspora event next month. The opposition has criticised the move, with one saying it is inappropriate for the government to sanction a paid function; the organisers have issued three types of passes at US $1 lakh, US $50,000, and US $25,000. Balan counteracted the opposition’s accusations, arguing that similar sponsorships have been sought in London and Dubai and that there is nothing wrong in seeking sponsorships.
