The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the opposition Congress are at odds over the issue of fake certificates in Kerala. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has accused the Left government of protecting those involved in illegal activities, whilst the CPI(M) has denied any wrongdoing and defended its student wing, the Students Federation of India. Two former members of the SFI have been charged with using fake certificates. Vidya K Maniyodi was arrested after almost two weeks on the run, whilst Nikhil Thomas was expelled from SFI’s primary membership. The opposition has criticised the police, claiming that they were protecting the accused and delaying arrests. The CPI(M) claims that it is the victim of a political campaign against it.
