As COVID cases show an upward trend in India, Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital remains on high alert amidst concerns over a new sub-variant of the virus named JN.1. Doctors at the hospital are advising the public to increase precautions while emphasizing that there is no need to panic.

Dr. Rohit Kumar, the Head of Pulmonary Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, stated that the hospital is actively conducting COVID tests and sending samples for genome sequencing. He explained that COVID is an RNA virus that constantly changes, giving rise to new variants such as JN.1. However, no cases of the new variant have been reported in Delhi so far.

Dr. Kumar emphasized that while people should not panic, it is crucial to take additional precautions. COVID primarily affects the respiratory system, with symptoms such as sore throat, cough, cold, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Dr. Kumar urged individuals experiencing these symptoms to consult a doctor immediately, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions and asthma.

The increase in COVID cases is a cause for concern in India, with 2,311 active cases across the country. Adding to the worries is the emergence of the JN.1 sub-variant, which has already been reported in the state of Kerala. As a result, the Union Health Ministry held a review meeting with all states to address the rising cases of coronavirus.

The Safdarjung Hospital’s proactive approach to testing and genome sequencing aims to detect any new variants of the virus promptly. Public cooperation in adhering to precautions such as wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and maintaining hand hygiene remains crucial in preventing the spread of COVID.

While the situation requires vigilance, it is essential to stay informed and rely on reliable sources for accurate information. Safdarjung Hospital recommends seeking medical attention if experiencing any COVID symptoms and advises individuals with serious underlying conditions to take extra care during this season.

By remaining cautious and following necessary precautions, the public can help curb the spread of COVID and protect themselves and their communities.
