Over 70s Face 10,000x Higher Death Risk, Deprived Areas Hit Hard

According to recent findings presented during the COVID-19 Inquiry, individuals over the age of 70 face a staggering 10,000-times higher risk of dying compared to those under the age of 15. The gravity of the situation is further emphasized by the fact that each victim is losing over 10 years of their life on average.

Furthermore, it has been discovered that mortality rates are 2.6 times higher in the most deprived areas when compared to the most well-off regions. This inequality highlights the devastating impact that COVID-19 has had on vulnerable communities.

The inquiry also revealed that certain ethnic groups have been disproportionately affected by the virus. Among the highest mortality rates were recorded among the Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and black communities. These findings raise concerns about the underlying factors that have contributed to the increased susceptibility of certain racial and ethnic groups to COVID-19.

The statistics, which were presented by lead counsel Hugo Keith KC during the first day of the inquiry’s latest phase, shed light on the government’s role in managing the pandemic. The inquiry is expected to span over nine weeks and will delve deeper into the actions taken by the government in response to the crisis.

These findings serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of COVID-19, particularly on the elderly population and those living in deprived areas. The immense loss of life and the stark contrast in mortality rates between different communities underscore the urgent need for effective measures to curb the spread of the virus. It is crucial that governments, healthcare systems, and communities come together to protect the most vulnerable members of society and address the underlying factors contributing to these disparities.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to shape our lives, it is imperative that we learn from these findings and take necessary steps to prevent further loss of life. This includes prioritizing the vaccination of vulnerable groups and implementing targeted strategies in deprived areas to ensure equitable access to healthcare resources and support. Only through collective efforts and a comprehensive approach can we hope to overcome the challenges posed by this devastating virus and build a healthier future for all.
