New Mexico braces for new Covid-19 strain amid holiday crowds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Health officials in New Mexico are urging caution as holiday crowds gather, reminding the public of the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and the flu. With concerns growing over the infectious new strain, JN.1, officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions.

We’re seeing developments there, and generally what happens is in Europe and then on the East Coast, and then it eventually goes to NM, explained Madison Schaeffer, director of the NMDOH hotline.

To combat the increasing risk, health officials are encouraging people to get vaccinated and roll up their sleeves before embarking on any vacation travel.

Get your booster before you do all of your vacation travel. I know it’s not the perfect time, but it’s definitely better to do it before you travel, emphasized Schaefer.

However, vaccination rates are still alarmingly low. I think vaccination rates are very low, about 40% of adults have gotten the flu shot and about 18% of adults have gotten the updated Covid vaccine, revealed CDC Director Mandy Cohen.

In addition to vaccinations, simple preventive measures such as frequent handwashing and mask-wearing can help protect individuals and their loved ones during the holiday season.

When you visit with loved ones, especially the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, if you want to be careful, you can wear a mask. Especially if you’re traveling and you’re on a plane or going to your doctor’s office somewhere, there’s a lot of sick people, advised Schaefer.

As the holiday season progresses, health officials in New Mexico are emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant and safeguarding public health.

It is crucial to remember that COVID-19 and the flu can present similar symptoms, making it essential for individuals to consider the possibility of flu or other respiratory viruses and stay away from others when feeling unwell.

The New Mexico Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to monitor the situation closely while urging the public to take appropriate precautions.

With the new COVID-19 strain on the horizon and the ongoing threat of the flu, maintaining high vaccination rates, practicing good hygiene, and wearing masks when necessary are crucial steps in safeguarding public health during the holiday season. Let’s prioritize the well-being of our loved ones and communities during this critical time.
