A total of 154 fresh cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Maharashtra on Saturday, according to the state Health Department. The department also reported that 172 COVID-19 patients were discharged after full recovery on the same day. With a recovery rate of 98.17 percent and a case fatality rate of 1.81 percent, Maharashtra is continuing its battle against the virus.

Testing remains a crucial part of controlling the spread of the virus, and on Saturday, 14,790 tests were conducted in the state. Of these, 2,421 were RT-PCR tests, while 12,369 were RAT tests. The state has been monitoring the emergence of a new variant, JN.1, which has infected 139 patients so far.

Since the beginning of the year, Maharashtra has recorded 141 COVID-19 deaths, with 70.92 percent of these occurring in individuals above 60 years of age. The majority of the deceased, 84 percent, had comorbidities, while 16 percent did not have any comorbidities, according to a release by the health department.

India as a whole reported 774 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, with two deaths reported–one each in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The total count of coronavirus cases in India since the outbreak in January 2020 has reached 4,50,17,431, while the death toll stands at 5,33,387. On a positive note, 4,44,79,804 individuals have recovered from the virus.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research conducted 34,660 tests on January 5, 2024. An impressive 220,67,81,345 vaccinations have been completed in India since the outbreak began.

Southern India has been particularly affected by the virus, with the highest number of cases reported in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.

As the battle against COVID-19 continues, Maharashtra remains vigilant in its efforts to control the spread, conduct widespread testing, and bring the recovery rate even higher. The state government continues to urge the public to follow safety guidelines and get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from the virus.
