Counter-terrorism Investigation Leads to Jail Sentences in London Extremist Content Case

A Met Police counter-terrorism investigation involving the review of a massive amount of digital evidence has resulted in the imprisonment of two individuals on terrorism charges. Al-Arfat Hassan, aged 21, and a 17-year-old, whose identity cannot be disclosed due to legal reasons, were friends online and shared extremist views and support for the terrorist organization Daesh. The investigation commenced after Hassan was detained at Heathrow Airport under ‘Schedule 7’ powers. During the investigation, thousands of incriminating messages were uncovered, revealing their terrorist mindsets and the content they had been sharing. Disturbingly, one video contained instructions for a knife attack and the construction of an explosive device. Detectives also found evidence that Hassan had purchased chemicals for such a device. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of online radicalization and the importance of proactive policing. The Metropolitan Police are urging the public to report any suspicious activity or information related to terrorism as part of their efforts to keep the community safe.
