Cork Community Groups Share €364k in Support Grants

In a positive development for community organizations in Cork, the Rural Development Minister, Heather Humphreys, and the Minister of State with Responsibility for Community Development, Joe O’Brien, have announced grants totaling over €364k under the Community Support Fund. This much-needed financial assistance will benefit 153 community groups across County Cork.

The grants, ranging from €700 to up to €5,000, aim to support locally led projects and initiatives. Minister Humphreys emphasized the importance of empowering grassroots projects in communities throughout the country: Through ‘Our Rural Future,’ I want to support locally led, ground-up projects in local communities across the country. This funding is all about giving a helping hand to our local groups and clubs with their energy costs, whether it’s the electricity bill, insurance costs, or other overheads.

Acknowledging the contribution of volunteers, Minister Humphreys recognized the dedication of local committees that ensure the smooth operation of community services and events: I fully appreciate the fantastic work carried out by volunteers in communities across the country, whether it’s the local Parish Hall Committee, the Development Association, or the local Senior Citizens Group. These local committees work hard to make sure they can keep the lights on and run fantastic local services and events for young and old to enjoy.

Many community groups in Cork will benefit from the grants. Notably, Kiskeam Development Association and Lombardstown Tennis Club will receive €3,500 each, Coiste Bailte Shlachtmhara Chúil Aodha will receive €1,000, and Freemount GAA Club will be allocated €4,000 to support their respective initiatives.

The Community Support Fund for 2022 was launched in November, with a total of €10 million in funding available. Notably, €100,000 of this funding was specifically designated to support Women’s Sheds, highlighting the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and inclusivity.

This welcome news highlights the important role that community groups play in enriching local areas and fostering a sense of belonging. The grants will enable these organizations to address their financial challenges and carry out necessary improvements for the benefit of residents. It is encouraging to see the government investing in communities and recognizing the vital contributions made by volunteers.

The Community Support Fund not only aids in covering energy costs but also facilitates the smooth running of community projects, ensuring they can continue to provide valuable services for all members of society, both young and old. As these grants are relatively small in nature, it is heartening to witness the significant impact they can have on local communities.

The allocation of funds to community groups in Cork serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives and promoting the well-being of local communities. By nurturing and empowering these organizations, they can thrive and make a lasting positive impact on Cork and the wider region.

As these grants are distributed, it is evident that the government recognizes the vital role played by community groups and their volunteers. Their dedication allows for the realization of valuable projects that enhance the quality of life for residents. This support not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to the sustainability and growth of these initiatives for years to come.

The announcement of these grants showcases the government’s determination to invest in local communities and create thriving environments for all. The positive impact of this financial aid will undoubtedly be felt by community groups throughout Cork, empowering them to continue their essential work in enriching the lives of residents and building strong, inclusive communities.
