Cops Allowed Paedo Cricket Coach to Continue Training Kids for 6 Months After Abuse Probe

A shocking revelation has come to light regarding Northumbria Police’s handling of child sex abuse allegations against a former Durham cricket coach and scout, Michael Strange. It has been reported that the police force failed to inform the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) about the allegations for a significant period of time, allowing Strange to continue training young cricketers for an additional six months.

The allegations against Strange were first received by Northumbria Police in November 2004, but the ECB was not informed until July 2005, despite Strange’s arrest in May of the same year. The Mail has revealed that when questioned about their handling of the case, the police changed the date of Strange’s arrest multiple times.

In 2012, Strange was sentenced to six years in prison for abusing young cricketers across the North East. However, as more survivors came forward, he was given three additional prison terms, ultimately landing him a total sentence of 13-and-a-half years. Strange was found guilty of sexually abusing five young cricketers between 1990 and 2004, including incidents that occurred at the Bill Quay cricket club in Gateshead, where Strange served as captain and coach.

Detective Constable Ryan Askwith praised the bravery of Strange’s victims for coming forward, stating, Strange, once revered as a hero in cricket circles, is a dangerous predator that preyed on young boys under his tutelage. I want to praise his victims who have come forward to ensure justice has been carried out.

However, this case also raises concerns about the safeguarding measures in place to protect young cricketers. The ECB, to this day, has not released a report on these measures, even though it was commissioned nearly seven years ago.

This is not the first instance of a cricket coach being implicated in child sex abuse. In 2017, ex-England and Essex coach John Williams was convicted of possessing images of child abuse, while another paedophile coach, Wasim Aslam, was allowed to go on cricket tours with children despite previously serving a four-year jail sentence.

These shocking revelations highlight the need for enhanced safeguarding measures in all sports organizations, particularly those involving young athletes. It is essential to create a safe environment for children to pursue their passion without facing the risk of abuse. The delay in informing the ECB about Michael Strange’s allegations is deeply troubling and raises questions about the effectiveness of the existing reporting and disclosure processes.

Moving forward, it is crucial for the authorities to conduct thorough investigations, ensure prompt communication with relevant sporting bodies, and introduce robust safeguarding protocols. The safety and well-being of young athletes should always be the top priority, and any suspicions or allegations of misconduct must be addressed swiftly and decisively.

The tragic case of Michael Strange serves as a reminder that vigilance, transparency, and a commitment to child protection are paramount in all areas of youth sports. Properly implemented policies and procedures, along with the cooperation of law enforcement and sporting organizations, are essential in preventing future instances of abuse and ensuring the safety of young athletes. Let us not forget the brave individuals who have come forward and acknowledge their contribution in bringing justice to light.
