Three Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) MLAs have reportedly met with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to urge the conversion of the Thoppur ghat section of the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway into a six-lane road. The current road is four lanes, and 244 people have died in accidents on the stretch over the last decade. The MLAs said the area was a death trap and additionally asked for two new bridges to regulate traffic congestion near Seelanaickenpatty and Mamangam areas in Salem. Following the meeting, Gadkari reportedly promised to consider their requests.
