Controversy Surrounds Death of Cheetahs in India’s Translocation Project
The recent deaths of cheetahs in India’s translocation project have sparked a heated debate among wildlife experts and authorities. The project, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to reintroduce cheetahs into the Indian subcontinent, a species that went extinct in the country around 70 years ago. However, India’s apex court expressed trust in the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), stating that it has no reason to doubt the government’s efforts and measures taken to ensure the welfare of the cheetahs.
The translocated cheetahs were introduced to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Out of the initial 20 radio-collared cheetahs brought from Namibia and South Africa, four cubs were born, raising the total count to 24. Unfortunately, three of the cubs and six adult felines have died due to various factors. The most recent death occurred on August 2.
Critics argue that these deaths highlight the need for improved monitoring and medical care for the cheetahs.
