Controversy Surrounds Death of Cheetahs in India’s Translocation Project

The recent deaths of cheetahs in India’s translocation project have sparked a heated debate among wildlife experts and authorities. The project, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to reintroduce cheetahs into the Indian subcontinent, a species that went extinct in the country around 70 years ago. However, the fatalities of these translocated cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa have raised concerns and drawn criticism from some experts.

High Commissioner of Namibia, Gabriel Sinimbo, defended the project, stating that fatalities are not uncommon when animals are introduced to new environments. He expressed hope that the cheetahs would eventually adapt to India’s environment and commended the Prime Minister for his efforts in reintroducing the large cat species. Sinimbo also emphasized the strong and supportive relationship between India and Namibia.

On the other hand, four South African wildlife experts penned a letter asserting that the deaths could have been prevented through better monitoring and veterinary care. This stance has fueled the controversy surrounding the translocation project. However, India’s apex court expressed trust in the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), stating that it has no reason to doubt the government’s efforts and measures taken to ensure the welfare of the cheetahs.

The translocated cheetahs were introduced to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Out of the initial 20 radio-collared cheetahs brought from Namibia and South Africa, four cubs were born, raising the total count to 24. Unfortunately, three of the cubs and six adult felines have died due to various factors. The most recent death occurred on August 2.

Critics argue that these deaths highlight the need for improved monitoring and medical care for the cheetahs. They believe that with better oversight and intervention, such fatalities could have been prevented. However, the Indian government assures that the cheetahs are closely monitored and provided with appropriate medical attention.

Despite the controversy, the reintroduction of cheetahs into India reflects a significant conservation effort. The aim is to establish a free-ranging population of these majestic animals, contributing to the restoration of India’s biodiversity. The endeavor has garnered international attention and appreciation.

While concerns remain regarding the death of cheetahs in the translocation project, it is essential to strike a balance between criticism and acknowledging the challenges that come with such ambitious conservation initiatives. As the cheetahs continue to acclimate to their new environment, it is hoped that measures will be taken to address the concerns raised and to ensure the long-term success of this groundbreaking project.

In conclusion, the deaths of the translocated cheetahs in India’s translocation project have ignited controversy and raised questions about the monitoring and veterinary care provided. While some defend the project as a crucial conservation effort, others call for improvements in safeguarding the cheetahs’ well-being. As the nation awaits the outcome of this ongoing debate, the fate of these magnificent animals hangs in the balance.
