The district collector of Damoh in Madhya Pradesh has declared that head covers, such as scarves and hijabs, are not mandatory parts of school uniforms. Students are free to choose whether or not to wear them and no teacher can force them to do otherwise. This statement was made after a poster featuring Hindu girls wearing hijabs went viral and caused a controversy. The school management offered an apology for the poster, if it hurt anyone’s sentiments. The school had termed it as a scarf. An inquiry has been underway regarding the incident, and the probe will reportedly be conducted based on evidence. The Urdu prayer ‘Lab Pe Ati Hai Dua’ will no longer be recited during morning assembly, and only the national anthem ‘Jan Gan Man’ will be sung. The controversy even reached the attention of the Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who claimed that no school can force a girl to wear something that opposes their culture.
