Lucknow, Dec 26 – Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Swami Prasad Maurya has sparked a controversy yet again with his recent comments on Hinduism. While addressing the Bahujan Samaj Rights Conference at Jantar Mantar, Maurya referred to the Hindu religion as a deception. His remarks have drawn criticism and caused unrest among various parties.

Maurya stated, Hindu ek dhokha hai (Hindu religion is a kind of deception). RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said twice that there is no religion called Hinduism but instead, it is a way of living. Prime Minister Modi has also said that there is no Hindu religion. Sentiments do not get hurt when these people make such statements but if Swami Prasad Maurya says the same, it causes unrest.

Following Maurya’s statements, Akhilesh Yadav, a prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party, advised that leaders should refrain from commenting on religion and caste. Speaking to representatives of Kannauj’s Prabuddha Samaj and Maha Brahmin Samaj Panchayat at the party’s state headquarters in Lucknow, Yadav emphasized the need to avoid making controversial comments that may instigate unrest.

Party workers had previously raised concerns over Maurya’s statements, leading to complaints from several Brahmin leaders within the Samajwadi Party. It was then that Akhilesh Yadav acknowledged the need to address this issue promptly.

Swami Prasad Maurya, an influential leader representing Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Uttar Pradesh, had previously sparked controversy by alleging that certain verses of the Ramcharitmanas were insulting to a large section of society based on caste. He demanded that these verses be banned. Maurya had also resigned from his position as a Cabinet Minister in the BJP Government and joined the Samajwadi Party ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

The contentious remarks made by Swami Prasad Maurya have not only drawn criticism but have also highlighted the sensitivity surrounding religious sentiments. As the debate continues, leaders are urged to exercise caution and refrain from making comments that may incite unrest or hurt sentiments related to religion and caste.
