Controversies are part and parcel of life, and the world of football is no exception. As we approach the end of 2023, it’s time to reflect on the moments that have made headlines and left fans around the globe stunned. From shocking incidents on the pitch to surprising off-the-field controversies, this year has been filled with plenty of heated moments in the world’s most beloved game.

Here are four of the top controversial incidents that have captivated the footballing world:

1. The ‘Kiss’ Scandal: The biggest controversy of 2023 came in the form of a scandal involving Luis Rubiales, the former Spanish FA Chief, and Jenni Hermoso, a player for Spain’s national team. After Spain defeated England 1-0 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, Rubiales greeted Hermoso with a hug, only to surprise everyone by kissing her on the lips. The incident sparked worldwide backlash, with Rubiales facing severe criticism and ultimately a three-year ban from FIFA. Hermoso later revealed that the kiss was non-consensual and a result of pressure from the Federation. Rubiales eventually resigned from his position as President of the Spanish Football Federation.

2. Illegal Gambling in Italian Football: Sandro Tonali, a star midfielder for the Italian national team, found himself in hot water after admitting to placing bets on games involving his former clubs, AC Milan and Brescia. Tonali’s revelation was part of a broader illegal gambling scandal that implicated more than 40 players, including Nicolo Fagioli of Juventus. Fagioli was initially suspended for 12 months but saw his punishment reduced to five months after pleading guilty. Tonali, on the other hand, will miss the EURO 2024 tournament and the remainder of the season with his new club, Newcastle United. Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo is also under investigation in connection with the scandal.

3. Everton’s Points Deduction: Everton Football Club faced a huge setback when 10 points were deducted from their Premier League standing due to a violation of the Profit & Sustainability Rule (PSR). The deduction, which followed a loss of £124.5 million ($154.7m) during the three seasons leading up to 2021-22, prompted a passionate protest by fans outside the Premier League headquarters. As a result, Everton dropped to 16th place in the table, just two places above the relegation zone. This decision has ignited further investigation into other clubs, with Chelsea and Manchester City both facing scrutiny for possible PSR breaches.

4. Sunil Chhetri’s Controversial Free-Kick: In the Indian Super League playoffs, Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri’s goal against Kerala Blasters sparked outrage. Chhetri took the free-kick without waiting for the referee’s whistle, leaving the opposition players and fans furious. The controversy escalated to the point where Kerala Blasters forfeited the match, resulting in a direct victory for Bengaluru FC. The rule allows for a quick free-kick to be taken without waiting for the referee’s signal, as long as there is a distance of at least 10 yards from the opposing players. Kerala Blasters were fined Rs 4 crore for their misconduct.

As the year comes to a close, these controversies have left a lasting impact on the footballing world. From unwanted kisses and illegal gambling to points deductions and disputed goals, the 2023 footballing season has been anything but dull. Fans can only hope for a less controversial and more exciting year ahead on the pitch.
