Construction of New Bus Stand in Mettur Begins: Adequate Facilities and Temporary Shift Planned
The construction of a new bus stand in Mettur, Tamil Nadu, is set to commence in the coming weeks. The municipal authorities have identified a temporary location opposite the site to shift the existing bus stand during the construction period.
The present bus stand in Mettur was built in 1992 on 0.631 hectares of land. With an increasing number of buses traveling to various districts and to Karnataka, the current space falls short of meeting the operational requirements.
Last year, the Tamil Nadu government announced its plan to construct a new bus stand in Mettur, equipped with modern facilities. The announcement was widely welcomed, and the Mettur Municipality passed a resolution expressing gratitude to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru. However, some councillors voiced their demand for the bus stand to be relocated outside the town, resulting in a delay in the project.
Municipal officials were tasked with finding suitable land to temporarily shift the bus stand. Finally, they identified a two-acre plot of land opposite the existing location, owned by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). The municipality officially requested permission from Tangedco, which was granted. Levelling work on the land has been underway since last week, with municipal workers diligently carrying out the task.
Mettur Municipal Commissioner (in-charge) S. Bhuvaneshwaran stated that once the levelling work is completed, the buses will operate from the temporary premises. Following this, the construction of the new bus stand will commence.
