Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the Centre’s muted response to the ongoing violence in Manipur in India’s Northeast region. Nine people have been killed in the latest round of clashes. Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to restore peace in the region, despite reports of widespread destruction of property, including the theft of ammunition from armories. Kharge called for an All-Party meeting to discuss political solutions to the unrest, which has been ongoing since earlier this year when clashes between rival ethnic groups erupted. The Manipur High Court recently called on the government to consider including the Meitei community on Scheduled Tribes list, a move which has sparked tension.
Congress President slams Centre for shameless drumbeating about Northeast India and mishandling of Manipur violence.
