The Congress party is demanding that the case of a Punjab minister accused of sexual misconduct be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a fair trial. The Governor of Punjab, Banwarilal Purohit, has already called for the minister, Lal Chand Kataruchak, to be removed from the cabinet. Punjab’s Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, is accusing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of shielding the minister, as he faces charges of sexual misconduct. Bajwa has written to the Governor calling for his intervention in the case and for the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court to hand it over to the CBI. A forensic inquiry into the allegations confirms the video of the sexual misconduct is genuine, and the victim has come forward. However, the AAP government appears to be putting pressure on the victim to withdraw and has reportedly registered false cases against supporters. The opposition leader also criticized the government’s Special Investigating Team (SIT), saying it was formed only to push the issue aside.
