Congress criticizes BJP government in Haryana after sunflower farmers were baton charged
On Tuesday, the Congress party condemned the BJP government in Haryana for the baton charge on protesting sunflower farmers in Kurukshetra. The farmers were demanding minimum support prices for their crops but were met with violence. In a tweet, the Congress party stated that the farmers’ right and their fair price were overlooked, while sharing a video of police baton charging the farmers.
Earlier that day, farmers protested on the National Highway 44 near Shahbad, concerning their plight since the government has failed to purchase their sunflower seeds on the minimum support price. The police responded by using a water cannon to disperse the crowd and subsequently baton charging the farmers to clear the area.
Congress leader, Randeep Singh Sirjewala, also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Khattar’s dictatorial rule in Haryana. He called for an end to such conspiracies, while assuring that the protestors wouldn’t tolerate the regime’s dictatorial power. The protest was led by the Haryana BKU-Chaduni chief, Gurnam Singh Chaduni.
The BJP-led state government had stopped the procurement of sunflower seeds on minimum support price and instead sought to procure it under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana initiative, offered at a lower rate of Rs 1,000 per quintal. However, the farmers contend that they are selling the produce to private buyers for Rs 4,000 per quintal instead of MSP rate of Rs 6,400.
