Bengaluru: Congress to Appoint 25 MLAs in Preparation for Lok Sabha Polls

With election campaigning coming to an end in five states, the Congress party has embarked on the process of appointing 25 MLAs and five MLCs for various state-run boards and corporations. This move is aimed at empowering its lawmakers and boosting the party’s preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls next year. It is also seen as an effort to address internal dissatisfaction within the party, particularly among senior MLAs and MLCs.

AICC general secretary Karnataka in-charge, Randeep Surjewala, arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday for discussions regarding the appointment of chairpersons and members to over 80 boards and corporations. In a meeting that lasted over two hours, Surjewala, along with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM and KPCC President DK Shivakumar, and other senior party members, deliberated on the appointments.

The decision was made to finalize appointments in phases. In the initial round, approximately 25 MLAs and five MLCs will be nominated. Subsequently, former MLAs and senior party functionaries will also be considered for appointment.

The MLAs’ list is almost ready, and the party might release it anytime now, revealed a senior Congress functionary.

In the selection process, the party will prioritize the seniority of MLAs for key posts like chairpersons of vital boards and corporations such as Keonics, Karnataka Housing Board, MSIL, and others.

While addressing the appointments, KPCC President DK Shivakumar stated, All appointments cannot happen at once; they will be done in two to three stages. We will do it.

Additionally, CM Siddaramaiah added, Surjewala has come; I’m not sure whether it will be finalized today or not. The plan is to appoint legislators — MLAs and MLCs — in the first phase and party workers and former legislators in the second phase.

In terms of party workers, district Congress committees have already made recommendations to the KPCC. Shivakumar urged them to propose the names of party workers along with their significant contributions to the party to be considered for nominations.

Many party MLAs who missed out on cabinet positions and party roles have been urging the party high command to expedite the appointments.

The Congress party’s decision to appoint MLAs and MLCs aims to strengthen their presence and organization ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2022. With nominations being finalized in phases, the party hopes to address internal grievances and ensure a smooth functioning within its ranks.

It is worth noting that the appointments will provide an opportunity for party members at different levels to contribute their expertise and ensure effective governance through the state-run boards and corporations. The Congress party remains focused on bolstering its position and mobilizing its cadre to face the challenges of the upcoming national elections.
