The participation of government officials in an event hosted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh, has resulted in a war of words between the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A photograph of the Satna District Collector Anurag Verma and Satna Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Shahi attending the RSS programme on 11 June triggered Congress protest. KK Mishra, the Congress media department chairman, alleged that the officials “saluted” the RSS flag and called for their exclusion from electoral preparations. Congress MP Vivek Tankha also demanded that the Election Commission prevent such officials from being involved in the upcoming state elections. However, BJP state secretary Rajneesh Agrawal observed that there was no violation of conduct rules by the officials attending the RSS event. He added that an RSS member could also work with the judiciary. No legal action could be taken against the officials, Agrawal stated. Satna Collector Verma explained that protocol had demanded his presence, given that ministers and other dignitaries had attended the event.
