Congress Accuses Modi Government of Dividing Manipur, Calls for No-Confidence Motion

The Congress party has called for a meeting of its Lok Sabha MPs in the party’s parliamentary office at 10:30 am on Wednesday. The Congress and Union Ministers locked horns over the situation in Manipur during the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government. Congress has accused the government of creating a great divide in Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic clashes since May.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi initiated the debate on Tuesday, stating that the Opposition was compelled to move the no-confidence motion to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vow of silence on Manipur. Gogoi emphasized that the motion was not about numbers but about justice for Manipur, expressing no confidence in the Government. He questioned why Manipur Chief Minister N Biren had not been sacked and criticized the delay in addressing the situation, highlighting the Chief Minister’s lack of presence and minimal response.

The debate on the no-confidence motion lasted until around 6 pm, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to provide a reply on August 10. Opposition members have been seeking discussion under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20.

The situation in Manipur has been tense for the past three months due to ethnic clashes between two tribal communities, the Meitis and Kukis. The clashes erupted after the Manipur High Court suggested considering adding one of the communities to the list of Scheduled Tribes. Manipur’s unrest has prompted the Congress party to take action and hold the government accountable.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing his second no-confidence motion in Parliament today, marking the first in his second term as the PM. The Congress party’s call for a no-confidence motion stems from their concerns about the handling of the situation in Manipur and the alleged division being sown by the Modi government.

The Manipur issue has become a focal point of contention between the Congress and the ruling party. As the debate continues and parties voice their opinions, it remains to be seen how the Modi government will address the concerns raised by the Opposition and whether the no-confidence motion will have any significant impact. The fate of Manipur and the political landscape of India hang in the balance as discussions unfold in Parliament.
