The Congress party has demanded the establishment of an ex-servicemen commission similar to the SC/ST Commission to address the grievances of military veterans. Rohit Chaudhry, the newly-appointed chairman of the Congress ex-servicemen wing, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of weakening the defense forces and claimed that there is a significant backlog in vacancies in the forces. Chaudhry claimed that the Agnipath scheme, which offers only four years of employment in the armed forces, is toying with national security. He vowed that the scheme would be reversed once Congress comes to power at the Centre. Chaudhry also alleged that the Modi government has been responsible for the anomalies in the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme implementation, betraying the defense community. He further claimed that the strength of the defense forces may decline from 15 lakhs down to 10 lakhs within the next few years. Chaudhry maintained that the current government concealed information about recommendations made by the Reddy Commission, which was formed in 2015 to examine the OROP issue. The Reddy Commission had recommended equalization in pensions anomalies every three years, while the government insisted on five years.
