Germany suffered another setback before hosting Euro 2024 as they were stunned 2-0 by Colombia in a friendly on Tuesday. Luis Diaz scored a header in the 54th minute, followed by Juan Cuadrado’s penalty in the 82nd minute. These goals gave Colombia their first win over Germany, who were booed by the home crowd. The four-time world champions have been struggling lately, having managed just one win in their last five matches, including a 1-0 loss to Poland and a draw with Ukraine.
Although Germany had more than 65% possession, they failed to get a shot on goal in the first half. They also struggled to play the ball out of their own half, with the Colombians looking far hungrier in attack and forcing Germany’s goaltender, Marc Andre ter Stegen to make several good saves.
Malick Thiaw was impressive in defense for the home side, but the introduction of centre forward Niclas Fuellkrug did little to improve things up front. Joshua Kimmich’s handball gave Colombia a chance to double their lead with Cuadrado scoring from the spot. The Germans now have less than a year to build a battle-hardened team for the continental tournament.
The loss will certainly be a blow for the Germans, who were hoping to gain confidence ahead of Euro 2024, which they will be hosting. On the other hand, Colombia will be delighted with this result and will gain some much-needed momentum before their World Cup qualifying campaign begins.
