It’s important to note that this study was conducted using human tissue in a laboratory setting, and not inside actual noses. While in vitro studies provide valuable insights, further research is needed to confirm these findings in vivo, with live subjects.

To understand the mechanism behind this weakened immune response, the researchers embarked on a scientific investigation. They discovered that when a respiratory virus or bacteria enters the nose, the front detects the intruder long before the back does. Cells lining the nose then immediately start producing extracellular vesicles (EVs), which act as decoys to prevent the germs from attaching to the cells.

These billions of EVs are expelled into nasal mucus, where they intercept and neutralize the invading viruses and bacteria. Dr. Bleier compares this process to kicking a hornet’s nest, causing the hornets to swarm and attack the threat before it reaches their home. Similarly, the body uses EVs to eliminate inhaled viruses before they can enter our cells and cause infection.

While this study provides valuable insights into the effects of cold air on our immune response, it is essential to take a balanced view and consider the limitations of the research. Further investigations are needed to fully understand the complex interactions between temperature, immunity, and respiratory illnesses.
