Coach Ryan Day’s Quest for Ohio State’s Offensive Identity Ahead of Critical Scrimmage, US

Ohio State’s Head Coach Ryan Day is on a quest to establish the team’s offensive identity ahead of a critical scrimmage. With the second major preseason scrimmage approaching, Day aims to solidify the Buckeyes’ offensive style by Saturday.

For decades, Ohio State’s offensive strategy primarily revolved around the running game. From the era of Woody Hayes to Jim Tressel, the team relied heavily on their ground attack. Even when Urban Meyer took the reins, the quarterback became a focal point, but the Buckeyes still maintained a substantial running game.

Since his arrival as offensive coordinator in 2017, Day aimed to enhance Ohio State’s passing game, and he succeeded. As head coach, he showcased a varied offensive repertoire. In 2019, the team ran the ball 59 percent of the time, even with dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields. The truncated 2020 season saw a slight dip to 57 percent, followed by a further decrease to 44 percent in 2021 when redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud took over as quarterback.

With Stroud now gone and a new starter yet to be named, the return of a run-heavy offense seems unlikely, especially considering the Buckeyes boast standout junior receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. Day’s proficiency in the passing game and the presence of highly-recruited quarterbacks suggest that throwing the ball will remain Ohio State’s focus in the foreseeable future. However, like many skilled pitchers, there’s room for more than one fastball.

Running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams could serve as the primary rushing options, akin to a four-seam fastball that allows the team to gain an advantage before mixing things up with the passing game, which can be likened to a more deceptive two-seam fastball that keeps hitters off-balance.

Day acknowledges the importance of a strong running game, particularly in crucial situations like the red zone or on third downs. He cites their loss to Oregon in 2021, where an over-reliance on the passing game made them predictable and hindered their scoring chances.

To achieve balance, the running game can be executed in various ways, while the passing game provides greater versatility. Utilizing quick slants, screen passes, and deep balls keeps the defense honest and ensures a dynamic offense.

Day recognizes the urgency of determining the team’s offensive identity based on the academic calendar. This week marks the last opportunity to solely focus on football before classes commence next Tuesday.

As the Buckeyes approach their second major scrimmage, finding their offensive identity is crucial for success in the upcoming season. Day emphasizes the importance of a strong running game while showcasing his proficiency in the passing game. With talented playmakers and a diverse offensive repertoire, Ohio State aims to maintain balance and keep opponents guessing.
