Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has flagged off 20 new electric buses in Shimla, bringing the total number of e-buses in the town to 70. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) currently operates 90 electric buses in the state, with 17 in Kullu, five in Mandi, three in Bilaspur and 50 in the Dhalli Depot in Shimla. The operational cost of electric buses is about Rs 25 per kilometre, considerably lower than their diesel counterparts. HRTC has issued a tender for 75 Type-I e-buses to be used in Shimla Local and Nadaun and technical specifications have been finalised for 225 Type-II e-buses to replace existing diesel buses. The government aims to replace the entire fleet of 1,500 HRTC buses with e-buses in phases. By promoting e-mobility, the state is hoping to become a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 2026.
