Mass Shooting at Club Q Shakes LGBTQ+ Community in Colorado Springs

Last year, the LGBTQIA2+ community in Colorado Springs was shaken by a devastating mass shooting that took place at Club Q. The incident left the community grief-stricken and filled with fear, as they grappled with the aftermath of the tragedy. Many individuals reached out to their friends and loved ones, ensuring their safety and well-being in the wake of the shooting.

Keeley Griego, Digital and Community Educator for Inside Out Youth Services in Colorado Springs, vividly recalls the chaotic aftermath of that fateful morning. Emotions ran high, and the community was left reeling from the impact of the shooting. Griego describes the days following the incident as a blur, as individuals not only dealt with their personal trauma but also had to switch into work mode to provide support for others.

Inside Out Youth Services, known for providing a safe haven for LGBTQ+ youth in the area for the past three decades, faced its own set of challenges in the wake of the shooting. Due to numerous online threats, the physical space where teens and young adults gathered had to be temporarily shut down. However, the organization quickly adapted and offered virtual services through platforms like Discord, along with organizing in-person events at undisclosed locations to ensure everyone’s safety.

The aftermath of the shooting had a profound impact on the local LGBTQIA+ community and Inside Out Youth Services. Griego emphasizes the importance of understanding the difficulties faced by the community during this time of immense hate, violence, and loss. The organization even had to close its Twitter account due to the overwhelming flood of hateful comments it received.

Following the tragedy, Inside Out’s community center remained closed until March. During this time, the organization focused on enhancing security measures, which even included the presence of an armed guard. Implementing such measures was not an easy decision, given the recent experience of gun violence in the community. However, it was necessary to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

In March, the community center finally reopened its doors. Inside Out has since witnessed an increase in the number of young individuals seeking help and support from the organization. Being able to provide a safe space where they can let their guard down is paramount to their well-being.

Griego believes that Colorado Springs still has a long way to go in terms of education and understanding for the LGBTQIA2+ community. Her ultimate hope is that one day Inside Out’s services will no longer be needed, but until then, the organization remains committed to supporting and uplifting the community.

The shooting at Club Q forever changed the lives of those affected, highlighting the urgent need for a more inclusive and accepting society. As the city continues to heal, it is essential to address the underlying issues that perpetuate hate and violence while fostering an environment of empathy and understanding.
