Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, faced disruption during his speech as climate activists stormed the stage, calling for a ‘green new deal’. The protesters demanded that Starmer reinstate his pledge for a £28 billion green prosperity plan. Despite the interruption, Starmer engaged with the activists and later explained to the audience that his previous mission was focused on clean power by 2030, which he believes is the most effective way to achieve a green future.

During his speech, Starmer emphasized the importance of financial responsibility in Labour’s plan to win the next election. He acknowledged that money played a crucial role, considering the state of the economy the party would inherit. He did not commit to extending free school meals to all primary school children, citing financial limitations.

In a major speech outlining his plans to reform the education system, Starmer pledged to break the ‘class ceiling’ if Labour wins the next election. He emphasized the need for strong rules regarding spending, stating that Labour must consider what they can afford. While he expressed support for breakfast clubs for every child, which he believes would make a material difference, he declined to commit to a specific figure for a pay rise for teachers, awaiting recommendations from the pay review body.

During the speech, Starmer highlighted his goal of having an additional half a million children meeting early learning targets by 2030. He also stressed the importance of modernizing the curriculum to eliminate the academic/vocational divide and ensure young people receive a well-rounded education.

Overall, Starmer’s speech touched on various aspects of education reform and financial responsibility. While facing interruptions from climate activists, he remained calm and engaged with them, explaining his stance on clean power and the need for realistic spending. The Labour leader’s plans aim to improve teaching for young children, reduce educational disparities, and create a more inclusive education system.
