The president of Karnataka’s Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind chapter, Maulana Mufti Ifteqar Qasmi, has cautioned Muslims against sacrificing a particular animal during Bakrid. Qasmi noted that the law prohibiting killing of cows and a few other animals remains in place despite a change in the state government. He urged the Muslim community to abide by the law and refrain from creating legal hurdles and allowing trouble-mongers to create a fuss. Qasmi also advised Muslims against parading animals on roads, especially in full public glare.
Qasmi said the particular animal is revered by many and referred to as gaumata or mother cow, and it is not advisable to sacrifice it when the law prohibits it. He added that Ministers in the new Congress government have been vocal about repealing the legislation that was brought in by the previous BJP regime.
The cleric stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and following cleanliness drives on the eve of Bakrid. He cautioned the Muslim community not to create any disturbance. The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act has not been repealed, and the law prohibiting the killing of cows and a few other animals has been in force.
Qasmi urged the Muslim community not to create any legal hurdles and recommended that they follow the rules and regulations. This, he said, will prevent the occasion of Bakrid from turning into any unwarranted and violent situations.
