Despite living with multiple sclerosis, a recent graduate of Clear Lake High School, Jackson Minter, has earned a track scholarship to West Virginia State University. Jackson’s journey has been filled with challenges, but his determination and positive mindset have propelled him forward.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 13, Jackson’s rare case has presented unique obstacles. Initially experiencing numbness in his face and tingling in his fingers and toes while in intermediate school, he was unaware of the gravity of his condition. I still wasn’t totally grasping what it did and how dangerous it was, Jackson recalled. Also, at first – I didn’t understand how rare it was for a young African-American.

Jackson is among just 10,000 known cases of pediatric multiple sclerosis worldwide, making his diagnosis even more extraordinary. Dr. Nikita Malani Shukla of Texas Children’s Hospital, who has been treating Jackson for years, explains that the typical patient with MS is typically older and female. However, there is a small subset of patients, about three to five percent, who develop multiple sclerosis in childhood.

Managing MS requires consistent effort, and Jackson has been proactive in his treatment. Thanks to advancements in medication over the past two decades, he has been able to effectively manage his condition. Initially, Jackson’s regimen included injections three times a week, but he has recently transitioned to a twice-yearly infusion medication. This progress and improved treatment options have allowed him to continue pursuing his dreams.

Next month, Jackson will be attending West Virginia State University on a track scholarship, where he plans to continue defying the odds. His resilience and determination have been the driving forces behind his success. For me to be here now feels great, Jackson said, smiling. I didn’t let anybody tell me I couldn’t, and I didn’t let anything tell me I couldn’t. I’m living proof that if you keep on going, you can get where you want to go.

Jackson’s story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. His positive attitude and refusal to let his diagnosis define him have allowed him to overcome the hurdles in front of him. With each step he takes on the track and in life, Jackson proves that determination and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements.

As Jackson continues his academic and athletic journey, he will undoubtedly face new obstacles. However, his story serves as a reminder that with resilience, support, and the right mindset, anyone can overcome the challenges they face. Jackson’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the unwavering human spirit.
