The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has apprehended a passenger attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 93 lakh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The person was identified as Karibil Haque, an Indian national who arrived in Delhi from Dubai on an Air India flight. The CISF officials intercepted him based on suspicious activities and recovered 1597 grams of gold wrapped with a white-colored tape from the waist of his trouser, which he had concealed in paste form.
The suspect was handed over to the customs officials for further action. Upon questioning, he admitted to carrying the smuggled gold. The CISF, along with the customs officials, carried out a joint interrogation of the accused. The CISF official stated that the arrest came as a result of the behavior detection, surveillance, and intelligence staff of Terminal-3 that noticed suspicious activities of the passenger.
Gold smuggling has been an ongoing issue in India, where people attempt to evade the government’s high import duties and taxes on gold. The CISF, which is responsible for airport security and protection of vital installations, has been successfully identifying and arresting several gold smugglers at different airports across the country.
