Cincinnati School Districts Reschedule Football Games to Beat Scorching Heat
In response to the blistering heatwave, several school districts in Cincinnati have made the decision to reschedule their football games to cooler times of the day. With temperatures soaring, the districts are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their students, athletes, and fans.
Lakota Local Schools, the second largest district in the Tri-State, along with Hamilton Local Schools in Butler County, have moved their Wednesday night games to Saturday morning. Lakota East freshmen, instead of playing in sweltering conditions, will gather at East High School on Saturday at 6 a.m. for a team breakfast before heading to Hamilton’s stadium. Although the varsity football game between Lakota East’s Thunderhawks and Hamilton’s Big Blue will still take place on Friday at 7 p.m., the health and safety of the players are being prioritized.
Mt. Healthy Junior/Senior High School is also rescheduling their games to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Their highly anticipated game against Ross High School, previously scheduled for Friday, will now take place on Saturday. This decision aims to protect the athletes, students, and fans from the extreme heat.
Meanwhile, some schools have chosen to cancel other sporting events altogether. Princeton schools made the tough call to cancel their girls’ soccer team’s game against Clark Montessori School on Wednesday, as well as two games scheduled for Thursday: boys’ varsity golf and middle school football. Loveland High School’s football game against Anderson has been pushed back to 8:30 p.m. on Friday to avoid peak heat conditions.
Taking similar precautions, two other districts have rescheduled the start times of their games to 8 p.m. on Friday. Holmes High School will face Newport Independent, while Talawanda High School takes on Fenwick. By starting later in the evening, these schools aim to mitigate the impact of the scorching temperatures on their athletes and spectators.
The decision to reschedule or cancel games is not an easy one, especially when it comes to highly anticipated events and home games.
