Zimbabweans Divided on China’s Influence: Only 37% View it Favorably

China’s growing economic and political influence in Africa has been a topic of debate and scrutiny. In a recent study conducted by professors of political science from Oklahoma State University, William Hatungimana and Haruka Nagao, the opinions of 1,000 urban professionals in Zimbabwe were analyzed. The findings revealed that only 37% of respondents viewed China’s influence on their country in a positive light.

China’s involvement in Africa has been substantial, with a significant increase in loans and foreign direct investment over the years. Between 2000 and 2020, African governments received a staggering $149 billion in loans from China for various infrastructure projects. Additionally, Chinese-owned businesses have significantly increased their investments, employing Africans and contributing to the region’s economic growth.

The study also highlighted the role of media exposure in shaping Zimbabweans’ perceptions of China. Respondents who were exposed to Western media showed a more negative view of China’s economic and political activities. On the other hand, exposure to Chinese media had a limited effect on their views of China’s political activities but improved their perception of its economic contributions.

Political affiliation also played a role in influencing respondents’ opinions. Supporters of Zimbabwe’s incumbent party, ZANU-PF, were more likely to be swayed by foreign media coverage, resulting in a shift in their favorable views of China. Opposition party supporters, already critical of China, were less influenced by media coverage.

The study’s findings shed light on the complex dynamics surrounding China’s presence in Africa. While some argue that China’s investments bring mutual benefits and promote economic development, others raise concerns about neocolonialism and the exploitation of African countries for China’s gain. This has sparked a debate between those who hold a positive view of China’s influence and those who view it with skepticism.

Public opinion plays a crucial role in shaping the future of China’s endeavors in African countries. The study emphasizes the need to consider the voices and concerns of ordinary Africans, especially those negatively impacted by China’s presence. Ultimately, the public’s influence on their elite representatives will determine the extent of China’s influence in Africa.

The survey results from Zimbabwe reflect a more critical stance towards China compared to other African countries. According to data collected by Afrobarometer between 2019 and 2021, approximately 63% of Africans view China’s economic and political influence as positive. This perception is on par with that of the United States.

Understanding public opinion is vital in comprehending the complexities of China’s relationship with Africa. While China’s economic investments may win the support of African elites, it is necessary to address the concerns and perspectives of the general public. By doing so, a more comprehensive and democratic discussion can ensue regarding China’s presence on the continent.
