China Urges Australia to Notify Navy Movements in Contested Seas

China has issued a warning to Australia, urging the country to notify China of its navy movements in the South China Sea and East China Sea. The call comes as a senior Chinese official expressed concern that a small incident between the two militaries could escalate, potentially damaging bilateral ties.

The warning comes on the heels of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent statement, in which he accused a Chinese warship of acting dangerously by using sonar during an incident with an Australian navy vessel in Japanese waters, resulting in injuries to a military diver.

Adding to the tensions, Australia’s naval vessel, Toowoomba, embarked on joint patrols with the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea, marking the first-ever collaboration between the two nations. This move takes place amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Manila over a contested shoal in the region.

Liu Jianchao, the head of the international department of the Chinese Communist Party, addressed the matter during a speech in Sydney. Liu questioned Australia’s presence in waters where Japan and China have a dispute and called for pre-consultations or notifications to prevent misunderstandings between the two militaries.

Highlighting the potential consequences of unaddressed incidents, Liu warned that these small events could quickly escalate, fueled by public emotions. He stated, Such small incidents could really escalate if it’s not properly managed.

Liu also suggested that Australia’s naval presence in the South China Sea conveyed a message about China’s policies, asserting that the Australian naval ships were there to contain China. He urged the Australian government and military to exercise caution and act prudently in the region.

Australia has consistently emphasized its commitment to respecting the freedom of navigation and overflight for all states in accordance with international law. Approximately two-thirds of Australia’s trade passes through the South China Sea, further underscoring the country’s strategic interest in the region.

The warning from China comes just weeks after Prime Minister Albanese made a trip to China, becoming the first Australian leader to visit the country in seven years. The visit aimed to improve relations between the two nations.

Liu expressed hope that Australia would reconsider its screening process for Chinese investment based on national security factors. Notably, Australia has blocked two rare earth investments by Chinese companies this year. At the same time, the country seeks increased investment in the sector from the United States.

As tensions continue to rise in the region, it remains to be seen how Australia will navigate its relationship with China and manage its interests in the contested South China Sea. Both countries must strive for open communication and diplomatic solutions to prevent further incidents and preserve bilateral ties.

In conclusion, the call by China for Australia to notify it of its navy movements in the South China Sea and East China Sea highlights the growing tensions between the two nations. As incidents between their militaries increase, there is a risk of escalation and potential damage to their relations. It is crucial for both countries to engage in pre-consultations and maintain clear lines of communication to prevent misunderstandings and ease tensions in the region.
