At the Marintec China trade fair, DNV awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) for its ground-breaking 11,000-CEU capacity pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) design.

Recognized as the world’s largest PCTC, the 234m long and 40m wide ship will have 14 decks allowing 11,000 car equivalent units (CEUs) to be stored simultaneously, increasing efficiency and reducing the transport cost per vehicle.

By implementing a combination of decarbonization measures, the Super Large Smart Green 11,000 design will lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, in line with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 and NOx Tier III requirements. The PCTC will primarily use LNG as fuel and feature a 4,200cbm LNG storage tank.

The vessel’s hull line has been optimized through CFD calculations and ship model tests in collaboration with ship designer Deltamarin. Additional energy-saving features such as a stern flow optimization device and an air lubrication system will effectively minimize resistance and reduce propulsion power requirements. The integration of hybrid propulsion systems and solar power further emphasizes the commitment to energy consumption reduction.

Norbert Kray, Regional Manager Greater China, Maritime at DNV, expressed DNV’s honor in being entrusted with assessing this next generation of car carriers and their excitement to work with China Merchants to bring these vessels to the water.

China Merchants is already in discussions with potential customers for the 11,000 CEU PCTC, according to the shipyard.

With the world’s largest PCTC design being awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) by DNV, it is set to revolutionize the industry by offering improved efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The 234m long and 40m wide vessel, designed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, will have a capacity of 11,000 car equivalent units (CEUs) across its 14 decks. By utilizing decarbonization measures, such as LNG as its primary fuel and integration of hybrid propulsion systems and solar power, this Super Large Smart Green 11,000 design meets the stringent requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index and NOx Tier III. DNV, a leading class for car carriers, is honored to assess this innovative design alongside China Merchants. Discussions with potential customers are already underway as the industry eagerly awaits the launch of this groundbreaking vessel.
