Children’s baking class serves up fun

SALISBURY — A familiar sweet treat, chocolate chip cookies, were on the menu at the children’s baking class held Saturday morning at Yadkin Path Montessori School on Bringle Ferry Road.

Four families joined instructor Rebecca Pendergrass Smith for the opportunity to learn a new recipe along with receiving helpful tips and techniques for baking, in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Pendergrass Smith, a culinary degree holder from Livingstone College, has taught food and nutrition at North Rowan High School and served as a chef for many years. She shared that she still loves to teach, and when this opportunity came up, she couldn’t resist participating.

Upon arrival, the children were given aprons to use for the class if they didn’t have their own. Pendergrass Smith emphasized the importance of handwashing as the first step in the kitchen to ensure the food they make is safe to consume.

To accommodate any allergies, she planned to teach a gluten- and dairy-free version of the classic chocolate chip cookie recipe. She provided instructions to the children and parents attending the class, allowing them to work together and assist as needed.

Pendergrass Smith explained the five parts of a recipe – servings, materials, ingredients, oven temperature, and yield – before distributing the ingredients to each group. The children eagerly whisked, cracked eggs, and mixed flour as instructed.

Once the cookie dough was smooth and creamy, it was time to refrigerate it. The children took this opportunity to run and play outside. After returning and washing their hands again, they scooped the dough onto baking sheets, with a few samples along the way.

While the cookies baked, Pendergrass Smith marveled at the children’s enthusiasm and curiosity. These kids are excited, they’re inquisitive, they’re very curious, she shared. She couldn’t wait to taste their creations.

The children each expressed their love for baking, with favorites ranging from cupcakes to cookies and even ice cream. Phor, one of the young participants, enjoyed cracking and whipping up eggs as well as assisting in preparing fruits.

As the class came to an end and the cookies cooled, the children shared their enjoyment of the experience. Lilah proclaimed that she loved all of it, while Aubrielle enjoyed mixing ingredients and putting them in the oven. Phor’s favorite part, according to his mom, was undoubtedly the eating.

The families had different reasons for attending the class, from seeking a fun Saturday activity to learning new recipes and fostering interactive experiences for their children.

Pendergrass Smith praised each child’s cookies for being special and unique, just like the children themselves.

This children’s baking class was an exciting and educational experience for both kids and parents alike. The event provided an opportunity for families to bond and learn together while creating delicious treats. By teaching important cooking techniques and fostering a love for baking, instructor Rebecca Pendergrass Smith ensured that everyone had a delightful time.
