Santa uses sign language to fulfill Christmas wishes

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The spirit of the holidays was on full display as children shared their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus using American Sign Language. For the past eight years, children who use sign language have had the opportunity to communicate their wishes to the Signing Santa at Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, Missouri. This year, nearly 100 kids were able to have a one-on-one conversation with Santa using sign language.

Toys, just lots of different things. I feel excited and happy, and I like signing what I want. Yeah! I am chatting with Santa, said Robin, a seventh-grade student at Jarrett Middle School, as she expressed her excitement through a sign language interpreter.

The event aims to promote inclusivity for children who often feel left out of traditional Santa encounters. So often our kids don’t have the opportunity to communicate with anyone directly, but to an idol like Santa Claus, who is so precious and so special and is all-knowing, to have direct access on a day like this is amazing, said Sadie Busch, a teacher at Jarrett Middle School.

The magical experience evoked emotions from both the children and the adults involved. It’s really, really special to see the kids come in and be able to talk to Santa for the first time. I have gotten misty more than once, shared Pete Duchrow, the assistant general manager at Bass Pro Shops.

Chelsea Cranston, a sign language interpreter from Jarrett Middle School, also expressed her sentiment, saying, It’s touching, it’s hard not to get emotional because it is special.

The event not only allows children to communicate their Christmas wishes but also grants them a moment of connection with Santa Claus. For many, witnessing the Christmas magic in person gives both young and old attendees something to believe in.

The positive impact of the Signing Santa event highlights the importance of creating inclusive experiences for all children, regardless of their communication abilities. By using American Sign Language, Santa ensures that every child’s voice is heard, making their holiday wishes come true.

In a season filled with joy and wonder, the Signing Santa brings an extra dose of magic to the lives of these children. The event serves as a reminder that the spirit of Christmas knows no bounds and can bridge gaps to create unforgettable memories for kids of all abilities.

As the holiday season continues, children who use sign language will have the opportunity to communicate their wishes directly to Santa, ensuring that their voices are heard, and the magic of Christmas is inclusive for all.
