The Ngaka Molema District is in a state of heightened alert following the tragic death of Chief Gopane Phillip Motuba (65) in Matshepe village, located just outside Mahikeng. Chief Motuba was allegedly attacked and killed by two unidentified individuals who entered his residence through an unlocked front door at approximately 4:30 am on Saturday, 26 August 2024. The authorities are currently investigating the incident as a case of both robbery and murder.
The shocking news of Chief Motuba’s murder has sent shockwaves throughout the community, sparking widespread outrage and concern for safety. In a disturbing turn of events, several houses belonging to a male villager suspected of being involved in the Chief’s death were set ablaze on Monday, 28 August 2023. These properties included spaces utilized by traditional healers (iizangoma) for training and consultation. In addition, two vehicles were deliberately set on fire, while another sustained damage. The turmoil continued as locals barricaded a major road between Mahikeng and Itsoseng.
To restore order and ensure public safety, the Mahikeng Public Order Police (POP) intervened, leading to the arrest of 39 individuals, comprising 11 males and 28 females, among others, on charges of public violence. These arrests, however, fueled the anger of the Matshepe community, as members converged upon the Lomanyaneng police station, demanding the immediate release of the suspects. Eventually, the crowd dispersed peacefully. The accused, aged between 22 and 55, are set to appear before the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in the near future.
The police have made a plea to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing investigations. Additionally, individuals can provide anonymous tips through the MySAPS App or by calling the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop number: ‪08600 10111.
In response to these unsettling events, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena has condemned the acts, emphasizing their blatant disregard for the rule of law. Such actions cannot and will not be tolerated. Lieutenant General Kwena urged the community to collaborate with law enforcement instead of resorting to vigilantism, which is unlawful and unacceptable.
This tragedy has shaken the Ngaka Molema District, leaving the community in mourning and searching for answers. As investigations continue, the focus now shifts to ensuring justice while upholding the necessary rule of law. The hope is that these tragic events will serve as a catalyst for strengthened alliances between law enforcement and the community, as they unite to overcome this devastating loss and work towards a safer future.
