Quarterback Mason Von Haden is one of the few returning starters and will lead the offense. Last season, he threw for 691 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 172 yards and three scores. Defensively, Carter Bowe returns to lead from the secondary after recording 43 tackles and one interception in 2022.
While some players have seen some playing time in the past, they will have a lot more on their plates this season. The arrival of newcomers further adds to the competition for playing time. The nonconference schedule includes matchups against Holmen and D.C. Everest, while Big Rivers play kicks off with a trip to defending conference co-champion Hudson. The Cardinals have three home games in league play against Menomonie, New Richmond, and Eau Claire Memorial, along with road trips to Hudson, Eau Claire North, River Falls, and Superior.
Raykovich emphasizes the importance of constant growth and improvement for the team. Every day, the players need to get better in terms of their knowledge of assignments, technique, and belief in themselves. Despite the challenges, Raykovich believes his team is up for it.
