The Chi-Hi football team is gearing up for a new challenge this season as they face limited returning starters. With just two starters from last year’s team, the Cardinals will rely on new players to step up and take on key roles on offense, defense, and special teams. This presents a unique challenge for longtime coach Chuck Raykovich, but it has also brought excitement to the coaching staff.

The team is incredibly young, which is something Raykovich has never experienced before in his 38-year coaching career. However, he sees it as an opportunity for growth and development for the entire team. In the past week and a half, the coaching staff has witnessed a lot of development from the players, which has been a source of excitement. The young players have embraced the challenge and have shown a lot of improvement.

Quarterback Mason Von Haden is one of the few returning starters and will lead the offense. Last season, he threw for 691 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 172 yards and three scores. Defensively, Carter Bowe returns to lead from the secondary after recording 43 tackles and one interception in 2022.

While some players have seen some playing time in the past, they will have a lot more on their plates this season. The arrival of newcomers further adds to the competition for playing time. As a result, practice has taken on extra importance for the team. Raykovich credits his team for their hard work during the offseason, which has been their saving grace at this point.

The Cardinals recently had their first scrimmage, hosting Northwestern and Tomah at Dorais Field. It was an opportunity for many players to get a taste of the speed and intensity of varsity football. With the scrimmage behind them, the team is now focused on their season opener against Holmen next Thursday.

The nonconference schedule includes matchups against Holmen and D.C. Everest, while Big Rivers play kicks off with a trip to defending conference co-champion Hudson. The Cardinals have three home games in league play against Menomonie, New Richmond, and Eau Claire Memorial, along with road trips to Hudson, Eau Claire North, River Falls, and Superior.

Raykovich emphasizes the importance of constant growth and improvement for the team. Every day, the players need to get better in terms of their knowledge of assignments, technique, and belief in themselves. Despite the challenges, Raykovich believes his team is up for it. He describes them as typical Chi-Hi kids – well-respected and trouble-free.

As the season approaches, the Chi-Hi football team is ready to face the new challenge of limited returning starters. The young team is eager to step up and make their mark on the field. Under the guidance of Coach Raykovich, they are working hard to develop their skills and continue growing as a team. With their determination and the support of their coaches, the Cardinals are looking forward to a successful season.
