ChatGPT Enhances User Experience with Custom Instructions Feature
OpenAI LP has rolled out an exciting new update for subscribers of its ChatGPT Plus service. The update introduces a beta version of the custom instructions feature, eliminating the need for users to recreate instruction prompts each time they engage with the AI chatbot. This new setting allows users to save their preferences regarding how they want ChatGPT to behave, enabling them to maintain their desired context between sessions.
ChatGPT users can now provide instruction prompts such as word limits or preferred tone, guiding the type of responses they receive. For instance, a math teacher using ChatGPT can tailor lesson plans suitable for six-year-old students, while a developer can specify the programming language required to generate code snippets. Users can even specify personal details like family size when seeking advice on grocery shopping, recipes, or vacation planning.
Previously, users had to repeat these preferences for every chat interaction. However, with the latest update, ChatGPT can now recall these instructions from previous sessions, making it more convenient for those who frequently require the same context. The custom instructions feature also works seamlessly with plugins, further enhancing the overall user experience.
While OpenAI has made this feature available in beta, users from the European Union and the United Kingdom currently do not have access. Users can enable custom instructions by navigating to Settings > Beta features > Opt into Custom Instructions.
According to OpenAI, the information users provide while customizing ChatGPT’s responses will be used to train the model on how to adapt to different instructions effectively. OpenAI assures users that their data can be shared with the aim of improving the model’s performance, striking a balance between providing tailored responses and avoiding overdoing it. However, users have the option to opt out of sharing this data if they prefer.
To specify their preferences, users need to input them into two different boxes before initiating a conversation with ChatGPT. The first box allows users to provide necessary information about themselves, while the second box enables them to define how they want ChatGPT to respond to prompts. Instructions are limited to 1,500 characters per box.
It is important to note that custom instructions undergo moderation to ensure they comply with OpenAI’s policies. Any instructions that could promote hate speech or violate OpenAI’s guidelines will be disregarded.
