The Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, India recently celebrated World Food Safety Day-2023. This event was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as a way to raise awareness about food safety and the dangers of consuming unsafe food.
Dr. Navin Kumar Rastogi, the Chief Scientist and Director-in-Charge of CSIR-CFTRI, gave a speech about the importance of being aware of World Food Safety Day and the benefits it provides to society. To further educate the public, scientists, technologists, scholars, and research students demonstrated the detection of adulterants in edible oils, spice products, sweets, milk, honey, and other food items. They used analytical instruments commonly found in food safety labs such as EA-IRMS, LC-MS/MS, GC, HPLC, GC-MS/MS, ICP-AES.
Food hygiene and microbial safety were also discussed, with demonstrations on how to properly handle and prepare food to prevent contaminants. Attendees were able to learn about food regulation, labelling, and nutritional information, including the addition of both healthy and unhealthy ingredients.
Over 150 students from various colleges participated in the event, including those from St. Philomena’s College, JSS College, and Jnanodaya PU College. The event was held in the Department of Food Safety and Analytical Quality Control Laboratory of CSIR-CFTRI.
The celebration of World Food Safety Day-2023 is a reminder of the importance of making informed food choices to maintain our health and well-being.
