Centre’s Mining Rating Program Sees Record Registrations in 2022-23

The Union Coal Ministry in India’s Star Rating Programme for 2022-23 has seen the highest registration of applicants since it began in 2018. The programme aims to foster competitiveness between coal and lignite mines and recognise their outstanding performance based on compliance with statutory provisions. As of June 19th, 376 mining companies have submitted applications to participate in the programme. The criteria for evaluation is based on seven key parameters including mining operations, economic performance, worker-related compliance, and safety and security. The participating mines are encouraged to undertake self-evaluation by July 31st, and the top 10% of the highest-scoring mines will be chosen for further validation via an inspection conducted by a committee. The remaining 90% of the mines will undergo an online review process, with all participants able to evaluate one another. The review will be finalised by October 31st and subsequently reviewed by the Coal Controller’s Organisation, leading to the publication of results by January 31st, 2024. The Coal Controller’s Organisation will be in charge of evaluating the mining companies, ensuring impartiality and transparency in the process.
